Some say that even way back then, it was planning the demise of the Memphis hub.

727's were the best - fast, comfortable, and loud AF.

When I was a kid, my parents divorced, and my brother and I often flew unaccompanied between ORF and ORD. On one flight, we got to go up to the cockpit, and the captain let us push up the throttles as we backed out of the gate. It must have been a 727, since I clearly remember three levers. You can’t get that sort of access today, sadly.

I remember a couple of times as a kid, going into the cockpit - probably when the plane was at the gate, I think?

If you want to experience that old school air travel feel, fly Aerolineas Argentinas domestically. Was down there a few years ago, and security is about the same as it was here before 9/11, and on a flight from San Carlos de Bariloche to El Calafate, we somehow left about 30 minutes early (!), and spent most of that extra time circling Perito Moreno Glacier and the mountains around El Calafate at low altitude, with the cockpit door open and at least one flight attendant in the doorway enjoying the view out front.

I did some engineering on that plane.

The last time we flew was on SWA, and the cockpit crew was great. As we deplaned, the captain invited my boys in and showed them a few things, including the “machine gun” (stick shaker). Nice guys.

Back in the day, cockpit visits for kids were standard, we always got plastic wings, and you could always get a free deck of cards. I wish I still had some of those.

SWA crews always seem to be pretty friendly.

I still have a deck of TWA cards around the house somewhere.

SWA crews often seem to be actually happy to be at work. On that same flight, we were getting on with our three kids and I said something to the FA at the front door about getting five seats together. She got on the phone to the FA at the back, who threw jackets/blankets across five seats to hold them for us. They were at the back of the bus, but at least we were together.

My dad was a Delta pilot. His three favorite commercial planes to fly were the DC-3, 727, and L-1011. Fortunately, I got to be on each type when he was flying them.

That would be awesome to be flying commercially with your dad up front!

Been years since I’ve been on a 727 or L-1011 but both great airplanes. Had a chance to take a ride on a DC-3 at Oshkosh last summer, but got there late and it was full.

Sorry to hear you missed the DC-3, but jealous you made it to Oshkosh. Next time you go, take a flight on the Ford Tri-Motor. We did that when I was 9, and it was a blast. The seats are small, and the plane is loud, but you don’t get to fly in one every day of the week, either. My dad loved Oshkosh, but preferred Sun ‘n’ Fun in Lakeland, FL, because he said you get get most of the same planes, but not nearly the massive crowd. I still want to go back to Oshkosh, though.

I’m lucky enough to live only a few hours drive from Oshkosh (Chicago area), and I’ve flown in there a few times, as well (but not that week).

I go every year, usually during the week when the crowds are a bit lighter. Love it - but haven’t been to Sun n Fun - will have to do that one of these years.

You go every year? My jealousy is immeasurable.
